Pals borders other municipalities that are ideal for enjoying accommodation or vacation rental houses, such as Torroella de Montgrí, Begur or Fontanilles. The geography of the area is majestic: it is located from an extensive plain of rain-fed fields, mostly rice, as well as mountains and hills with supernatural views of the surroundings and the Baix Empordà.
Documents have been found that talk about Pals as far back as the end of the 9th century. The village itself is clearly Romanesque, but in the explosive Gothic period, during the 15th century, Pals underwent several remodelings in that style. During the Civil War, Pals was badly destroyed, and what we see today is a reconstruction that took about thirty years in total.
The vegetation is a very unique aspect in the municipality of Pals. The forest is clearly dominated by the pine and Aleppo pine groves that stretch across the Begur Massif. The vegetation around the beach dunes, one of the most important psammophilous vegetation in Catalonia, is also remarkable.
Less than 10 kilometers from Pals we find the town of Peratallada, one of the prettiest villages in the entire province of Girona. Surrounded by a wall, the town of Peratallada is enchanting for its medieval atmosphere and its cobbled streets covered with bougainvillea. Peratallada is a very good option near Pals to try Catalan cuisine, as it offers a diverse and quality offer.
Although the town center does not have the beach right there, 10 minutes away you'll find Platja Gran de Pals. 2400 meters long, you can enjoy a quiet time with friends or family overlooking the Medes Islands and the Gola of the Ter and the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà.
The historic building of Ca la Pruna is a Gothic and Renaissance house from the 16th century that was located outside the city walls at the time. Today, Ca la Pruna is the House of Culture of Pals and an exhibition hall for Catalan wines and cavas.
The Plaça Mayor in Pals is one of the unmissable places in the village. In the old days, the market was held there and it was a meeting point for the local people. Nowadays, the square, which consists of well-preserved stone buildings, is home to bars, craft shops and the Casa de la Vila, the town hall.
On the side of the square we find a Gothic arch, Portal de la Vila, which leads to the Carrer Major, the most beautiful street in Pals. It stands out for its arches and its unique walls lined with beautiful plants.
If you are in the center of Pals, visit the Church of Sant Pere. In 15th century Gothic style, its baroque façade was created using the stones of the ruined 12th century castle. The church consists of a nave with a polygonal head. There is also a square bell tower, with semicircular arches.
They say that everything is clearer from the heights. But what is certain is that the Josep Pla viewpoint will not leave you indifferent. With views of Pals and the entire Baix Empordà, the viewpoint consists of several olive trees and a sculpture dedicated to Josep Pla, writer from Palafrugell.
