Do you like medieval villages, hiking and mountain bike routes? Towards Vilaür there are not enough people! This small municipality in the Alt Empordà, located near the Baix Empordà and the Gironès, combines flat agricultural areas with hills and unevenness. In addition, the old town is a work included in the Inventory of Architectural Heritage of Catalonia.
Although the municipal term of Vilaür was delimited for the first time at the beginning of the 19th century, we place the origin of the town center in the Middle Ages, between the 10th and 11th centuries. In addition, remains of Iberian and Roman ceramics have been found in various places in the town, as well as flint arrowheads from the Neolithic. Vilaür is mentioned for the first time in the 11th century, when it belonged to the monastery of Sant Esteve de Banyoles.
One of the great essentials of Vilaür is, without any doubt, its old town, which forms part of the Inventory of Architectural Heritage of Catalonia. Vilaür was a medieval fortified town, surrounded by a wall and impenetrable from the outside. Currently, it preserves part of its fortified enclosure. In addition, in the center of the old town we find the parish church of Sant Esteve, a fortified Romanesque building from the 12th and 13th centuries, which is also worth seeing. Outside the grounds, you cannot miss some historic farmhouses, such as Can Puig, from 1789 and Can Pou, from the 16th and 17th centuries.
A very good way to discover the surroundings of Vilaür is on foot or by bicycle through its routes and paths. You will find from simple routes, ideal for doing with the family, to more difficult routes. If you are mountain biking lovers, keep in mind that during the second fortnight of July, every year, the Marxa Popular en BTT is held, where three different circuits are proposed.
Vilaür is the perfect town to combine the tranquility of the rural environment with the hustle and bustle of the Costa Brava beaches. From Vilaür you can enjoy the beaches of L'Escala or Sant Pere Pescador, as well as visit the ruins of the Greek colony of Empúries.
