The history of Corçà and its surroundings

Although Corçà has several archaeological sites from the Roman era, such as Puig Rodó or Santa Cristina , it is not mentioned for the first time until the year 878, under the name of Quartianum. Centuries later, in 1274, Corçà was bought by Bishop Bernat de Vilamarí and became part of the Baix Empordà bishopric. In its recent history, it is worth highlighting the incorporation of Casavells and Matajudaica into the municipality in 1969, as well as the construction of the Santa Cristina neighborhood during the seventies of the twentieth century.

Stroll through the alleys of the old town

The historic center of Corçà still preserves the medieval structure and stone houses that are worth seeing. You can also get close to the parish church, built in the 18th century on top of an earlier temple. A few meters from the old town, we find the Alberg or Caramany castle , a building that retains its air of medieval fortification. Finally, you cannot leave without visiting the Romanesque church of Santa Cristina , built in the 12th century. Inside there was a 15th century altarpiece, attributed to the Master of Olot, which you can see at the Girona Art Museum.
