The origins of La Bisbal d'Empordà can be found in Roman times, in a villa called Fontanetum . It is not until the beginning of the 11th century that it is mentioned as Bisbal, when the town was ceded to the bishop of Girona. During the 14th century, La Bisbal was a walled municipality and, from the 20th century, it began to be known for the pottery and ceramics industry.

Get to know its architectural heritage

Your route to get to know the town of La Bisbal could start by strolling through the narrow streets of the old town, configured around the palace castle, a construction of the 11th-12th centuries, which was the residence of the bishops of Girona. It currently has an upper lookout from where you can see the best panoramic views of the town, the Emporda plain and the Gavarres. You can also continue walking to the baroque church of Santa Maria, admire the Pont Vell over the Daró, built in the 13th century and rebuilt in the 16th, one of the most popular constructions in the Baix Empordà. Finally, you can pass by the architectural complex of Les Voltes, designed by Martí Sureda in 1860.

But if you want to know in depth the history of earthenware and ceramics in La Bisbal d'Empordà, we recommend that you visit the Terracotta Museum, located in one of the oldest ceramic covering factories in the center of La Bisbal, founded in 1928. The museum contains more than 6,000 pieces of ceramics, tools and utensils, as well as 2,000 artefacts from all over the Peninsula.
