A medieval town that preserves authentic architectural gems. This is Castelló d'Empúries, a town in Alt Empordà, located on the Costa Brava and very close to the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà. The term is divided into two parts: the old town and Empuriabrava, a seaside tourist complex which is also one of the largest residential marinas in the world.
Although in recent years prehistoric remains have been found near the center of Castelló d'Empúries and even a group of silos that could be pre-Roman, there is no record of the town until the 10th century, when the Empúries County named it the county capital and the town acquired a lot of political relevance. A splendor to which some of the town's most important monuments testify, such as the Basilica of Santa Maria or the Palau dels Comtes. As for more recent history: the Empuriabrava Marina, this long network of navigable canals, was built in 1967.
Castelló d'Empúries is full of must-sees: At the entrance, the Basilica of Santa Maria, also called 'Catedral de l'Empordà', the artisan neighborhoods and the Jewish quarter, the Gallarda portal, which was the old entrance in the town's fortified enclosure, the Casa Gran, a Gothic building that served as a residence for the area's nobility. Without forgetting the palace of the counts, a building from the 14th century, the convent of Santa Clara, founded outside the walls of Castelló d'Empúries and moved inside the center at the end of the 17th century to protect itself from the disasters of war, and the Gothic building of the Curia and Prison, where graffiti left by prisoners is preserved.
If you stay in a holiday cottage in Castelló d'Empúries, you can walk along the greenway of the Muga River, walk along the great GR-92 route and, above all, walk or cycle through the protected area of the Natural Park of Aiguamolls de l'Empordà, where you can see a lot of different bird species and take amazing photographs.
If you like sports, Empuriabrava offers a wide range of sports activities by land, sea and air, such as parachuting, kayaking, diving, sailing, horse riding or tennis. If what you want is to relax for a while, you can choose to discover one of its magnificent beaches.
