What can I do in Vila-sacra and its holiday cottages?
Do you like
cycling and want to go on a quiet, rural getaway? In the middle of the Empordà plain, just over ten minutes from
Figueres, you will find Vila-sacra, a small town where you can get to know the typical Empordà agricultural landscape and take a few routes and walks on foot or by bike.
The history of Vila-sacra and its surroundings
The history of this small town in Empordà is closely linked to that of the monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes. In fact, at the end of the 18th century, following the disasters caused by the Rosselló War, the monks of the monastery had to move to the castle of Vila-sacra, of which only the tower remains today. They stayed there for a few years, until 1805, when King Charles IV granted them the transfer to Figueres. As a curiosity: Etymologically, it seems that the name Vila-sacra comes from the word villa and from Saccari, a personal name, and appears documented for the first time in the 10th century.
What to do during your stay at a tourist accommodation in Vila-sacra?
Visit its architectural heritage
If you stay in a rural house in Vila-sacra, you have two unmissable places to visit: the parish church of Sant Esteve , a fortified Romanesque building built in the 13th century, but extended during the Baroque, and the castle or palace of the Abat, which nowadays houses the town's Town Hall. It is, however, an old Benedictine monastery that belonged to Sant Pere de Rodes . Of the ancient remains, the circular tower is preserved, about fourteen meters high.
Take routes on foot or by bike
If you want to know what a real rural village of the Empordà plain is like, take your bike or put on some good walking shoes and discover the fields around Vila-sacra, dedicated to dry farming. Another option is to get closer to the banks of the Manol River. In addition, just over 10 kilometers away, half an hour by bike, you have the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà and the beaches of Empuriabrava.
Enjoy the Onion and Calçot Fair
If you visit Vila-sacra during the month of March, we recommend that you stop by the Onion and Calçot Fair, ideal for lovers of calçots and romesco sauce. You will find activities, craft and food stalls and, of course, calçots tasting throughout the day.
