In the small town of Agullana, located in the Alt Empordà and very close to La Jonquera and the border with France, you can find very authentic holiday cottages and tourist accommodation ideal for enjoying this small town that extends between the Guilla river valley and the Alberes, in the Pyrenees. An ideal town for lovers of hiking, mountain bike routes and cultural tourism.

What can I do in Agullana and its holiday cottages?

Megalithic monuments, hiking and lots of history. These are some of the things you will find in Agullana, a small town in the Alt Empordà located five kilometers from La Jonquera and which is part of the Salines-Bassegoda consortium. This is the town where the last meetings of the Republican government took place before going into exile, during the Spanish Civil War .

The history of Agullana and its surroundings

Agullana has been inhabited since prehistoric times, as evidenced by the four megalithic monuments known as Can Bec de Baix , corresponding to the Bronze Age. However, the first documentary reference to Agullana can be found in 1019, under the name of Aguliana. What has marked much of Agullana's history, however, is its location, near the Vallespir and the border with France. In fact, during the 17th and 19th centuries, the town became a sort of stable camp for the armies of both sides. Later, at the beginning of 1939, shortly before the end of the Spanish Civil War, Agullana was a transit territory for many people who went into exile, among whom there were a handful of prominent politicians, such as Lluís Companys .

What to do during your stay at a tourist accommodation in Agullana

Take a historical route through the town

If you like history, Agullana is full of must-sees. On the one hand, you can visit its megalithic monuments: three dolmens and two menhirs that are worth seeing. You also can't miss the Can Bech de Baix Necropolis, a late Bronze Age site where you'll also find a permanent exhibition. And, finally, you can choose to see the monument to Lluís Companys, 123rd president of the Generalitat de Catalunya, assassinated in 1940. A monument to exile.

Hiking and mountain bike routes through the Albera Natural Park

If you want to get to know the forests of Albera, through oak, oak and chestnut trees and the Salines-Bassegoda, there is no shortage of people heading to Agullana! You will find plenty of ideal routes for walking or mountain biking, such as the one that goes from Agullana to the Ermita de Santa Eugènia or the one that goes through Darnius.

Rest and disconnect. Comfort, to REPEAT.

The house is fully equipped, very comfortable and convenient to enjoy it. In a quiet environment, but integrated into Capmany, so pleasant walks and good local food. Nuria has always been aware that everything was to our liking, solving our doubts and providing valuable information for other occasions. We have spent a few days accompanied by our children (25 and 22 years old) and their partners, and the stay has been comfortable for everyone. We will certainly repeat.

Family space that lets you breathe

We repeated! The space allows the family to be together but everyone has a space and you don't feel overwhelmed. The environment is also exceptional. Kids have everything to keep them entertained, both inside and outside. The only improvement I would hope for is to change the curtains which are not black out and too short (especially in the outer room of four and the moon wakes up young and old too early); also change some auxiliary tables and lamps that are too simple (with little investment it would raise the feeling of luxury).

Naturaki respond: Thank you, Marta, for your review and thank you for repeating El Portaló de Cantallops. We love that our guests enjoy and perceive the diversity of spaces to enjoy that the house has. In relation to what you are commenting on, we appreciate your comments, they always help us to improve. Just this summer we plan to change the blackout curtains, so we will take into account your comments about the blackout. As for the lamps, you will have seen that there are different models and each one fulfills a different function... but we appreciate your constructive comments, and will take them into account for future changes and improvements. Thanks again for your honesty, Eliana.

The house is very spacious, beautiful and cozy. Everything was super clean. The heating and the two fireplaces warm up very well. Hot water without problems in the showers. The truth has not lacked anything.

NatEl Portaló de Cantallops - With friends

Ideal weekend with friends, lots of EMBER and lots of FIREPLACE!

The house is amazing. Luis, who received us, is lovely and has been waiting for us for anything we would have needed: excursions, open shops, check out, everything. It's like a nice guardian angel :) The walls are original, and it is restored conscientiously and with very good taste. The rooms are very spacious, the ceilings are high, and turn on the heating of the entire house 24 hours before we arrived to have the house warm. There are 3 fireplaces: one in the kitchen / dining room, the other in the living room where there is a giant table and the other in the study, in the large room. There is no noise, the town is small and genuine, the small shop of Cantallops is open Sunday morning and we went to look for wires for the Calçotada meal, which we lacked: they did not have and they bring us to the house in 20 minutes. The bathrooms, with heating all, very clean everything. The garden cared, lots of wood and Patfuego every fireplace. Too bad that the water in the pool, now in February was so cold. With the sunny day we had it was tempting... It has also been great to have TWO barbecues in the garden, one large and one small. There were darts, soccer ball, board games, story books and short novels we also liked a lot. The kitchen is very well equipped. We were surprised because we could not find wine glasses, but 3 minutes later we saw that there were a couple of boxes to be released. We were left wanting to do the wine tasting of the farmhouse on the side, it looked very good! The orientation of the house is perfect, because the garden is sunny all day, and from the ladders you can see the sunset. We also liked this. The photographs do not do justice to the house, it is much better. And for quality / price issue, we were really happy. This house is a jewel. A marvel. WE ARE NOW LOOKING NEW DATES TO RETURN !!!
