The history of La Jonquera and its surroundings

From the 13th century to the middle of the 19th century, La Jonquera was owned by the Rocabertí family. The Treaty of the Pyrenees, from 1659, placed the new border between the Spanish and French monarchies in the Sierra de l'Albera. A fact that obviously marked the subsequent history of La Jonquera, which has become a strategic enclave due to its border position.

La Jonquera is full of must-sees. At the entrance, the parish church of Santa Maria , from the 18th century, which has a Gothic facade and is surrounded by houses from the same period or older. Know its history

In 1939, at the end of the Spanish Civil War, La Jonquera was the scene of the republican exile, of hundreds and hundreds of people fleeing the Francoist troops and marching to France. A reality that you can see at the Exile Memorial Museum, which also hosts very interesting temporary exhibitions.

If you want to walk for a while, you can enjoy the higher, green, leafy and forested Albera.
