Megalithic monuments, hiking and lots of history. These are some of the things you will find in Agullana, a small town in the Alt Empordà located five kilometers from La Jonquera and which is part of the Salines-Bassegoda consortium. This is the town where the last meetings of the Republican government took place before going into exile, during the Spanish Civil War .
Agullana has been inhabited since prehistoric times, as evidenced by the four megalithic monuments known as Can Bec de Baix , corresponding to the Bronze Age. However, the first documentary reference to Agullana can be found in 1019, under the name of Aguliana. What has marked much of Agullana's history, however, is its location, near the Vallespir and the border with France. In fact, during the 17th and 19th centuries, the town became a sort of stable camp for the armies of both sides. Later, at the beginning of 1939, shortly before the end of the Spanish Civil War, Agullana was a transit territory for many people who went into exile, among whom there were a handful of prominent politicians, such as Lluís Companys .
If you like history, Agullana is full of must-sees. On the one hand, you can visit its megalithic monuments: three dolmens and two menhirs that are worth seeing. You also can't miss the Can Bech de Baix Necropolis, a late Bronze Age site where you'll also find a permanent exhibition. And, finally, you can choose to see the monument to Lluís Companys, 123rd president of the Generalitat de Catalunya, assassinated in 1940. A monument to exile.
If you want to get to know the forests of Albera, through oak, oak and chestnut trees and the Salines-Bassegoda, there is no shortage of people heading to Agullana! You will find plenty of ideal routes for walking or mountain biking, such as the one that goes from Agullana to the Ermita de Santa Eugènia or the one that goes through Darnius.
