The history of Vilanant and its surroundings

Vilanant appears mentioned, for the first time, in the year 966, under the name of 'Villa Avondant' and forming part of the county of Besalú. Later, in 1290, it became part of the royal battalion of Figueres and during the Roussillon War it was looted by the French army. In the 19th century, phylloxera caused a serious demographic crisis that lasted practically an entire century. In 1996 the old municipal area of Taravaus was incorporated into Vilanant.

You can also visit the chapel of Sant Jaume dels Verders, an 18th century temple located near the castle of Escales, in the middle of nature. In addition, both Vilanant and Taravaus preserve many buildings and farmhouses from the 17th and 18th centuries that are worth seeing.
