This is what we can find in Vilanant, a small town located at the foot of the Salines-Bassegoda and the Garriga d'Empordà and ten minutes from Figueres. A municipality of just over 400 inhabitants fantastic for lovers of hiking, cultural tourism and mountain bike routes.

Vilanant appears mentioned, for the first time, in the year 966, under the name of 'Villa Avondant' and forming part of the county of Besalú. Later, in 1290, it became part of the royal battalion of Figueres and during the Roussillon War it was looted by the French army. In the 19th century, phylloxera caused a serious demographic crisis that lasted practically an entire century. In 1996 the old municipal area of Taravaus was incorporated into Vilanant.

Vilanant, being part of the Salines-Bassegoda consortium and part of the Garriga d'Empordà , offers a lot of possibilities, especially if you are fond of hiking, mountain bike routes and active tourism. Routes of various difficulties, unique landscapes and ideal places to walk with the family and discover, for example, dry stone constructions. You can also choose to visit the Mas Nebot oak grove, where you can walk among hundred-year-old monumental oaks.

Vilanant is full of must-sees: From the Romanesque church of Santa Maria de Vilanant, passing through the church of Sant Martí de Taravaus, built in the 13th century, during the late Romanesque period, to the hermitage of Sant Salvador de Coquells, a small 11th century temple located in the middle of a landscape of great beauty. You can also visit the chapel of Sant Jaume dels Verders, an 18th century temple located near the castle of Escales, in the middle of nature. In addition, both Vilanant and Taravaus preserve many buildings and farmhouses from the 17th and 18th centuries that are worth seeing.
