Historical notes so you can get to know Rosselló when you stay in a holiday cottage
In Rosselló, numerous archaeological sites have been found that demonstrate the passage of inhabitants through these lands since the Neolithic. After the Islamic occupation, the lands of Rosselló were reconquered by Ramón Berenguer IV , who distributed them among his knights. Specifically, Guillem de Roussillon was hit by a defense tower near the current center of Alcanís, from which he began to repopulate the area. Later, the Rosselló family sold it to the Hospitallers (who lived with the Templars until their disappearance.
Rosselló, like many other lands of the Segrià, suffered a great depopulation as a result of the War of the Reapers and it was not until the 18th century that Felipe V encouraged repopulation.
Things to discover in Rosselló if you stay in a holiday cottage
If you come to spend a few days in a holiday copttage in Rosselló, the first thing we recommend is to take a walk around the town and pay special attention to the Church of Sant Pere , from the 18th century and in neoclassical style, which has been restored after several episodes of deterioration over time, the attached rectory was removed and a higher tower was built in 1990, one of the reasons that probably caused the detachment of its bell tower in 2016 , after 15 days of cracks appearing in the building.
On the outskirts of the town, on the road to Vilanova de Segrià, we find the medieval necropolis of Tossa de Baix excavated in the rock. 55 graves of different sizes were recovered and in one of them, specifically 36, a skeleton. The place is very easy to find and is indicated with one of the green "Senders del Segrià" signs.
The textile colony of Segrià d'Alcanís
In 1890, taking advantage of the waters of the
Pinyana Canal , a textile colony was built on the outskirts of Rosselló. Businessmen from
Barcelona, who sought to carry out the
Industrial Revolution in Catalonia, saw the Pinyana Canal as an alternative to the Llobregat with the advantage that at that time, in this territory, unionist ideas and the workforce had not yet arrived it was cheaper.
It is said that
Alcanís was one of the most independent colonies, since to accommodate all the families that came to work,
houses, a church, a school and even a
pediment track were built there. The colony is located between two water channels and had everything necessary to live there, even a civil guard barracks to control any conflicts with the farmers over water.
The colony was built where there had already been a
flour mill and after an attempt had been made to install a
paper factory there, although the project failed and the property passed into the hands of the British bank Gamorgashire.
During the Civil War, the colony and its facilities were occupied by Francoist troops until in 1941, it passed into the hands of a textile company from Barcelona. The crisis in the sector of the decade of the 1980s affected the four spinning mills of Segrià very strongly and they ended up closing their doors in 1995.
Today, the house of the owners of the colony has been rehabilitated as a restaurant, but almost nothing remains of what the colony used to be.
Routes through Rosselló from your holiday cottage
There are numerous possibilities for
routes around Rosselló, but specifically two start at the parking lot at the end of Camí del Calvari, where the small canal is located.
One consists of following the irrigation channel and although it is not circular, the path is flat and wide. The other is the one that runs along the canal to Camí del Secà and in front of the urbanization of La Serra. Once in the swamps, you take a dirt road to the quarry, passing the rubbish dump. When you reach the path from
Almacelles to Rosselló, look for the grove (green path) and choose whether to continue or return.
Touring
the Bosquet is a third proposal to take into account, keeping in mind that the area is well known for
mountain biking. Finally, remember that Segrià has an impressive road network for bicycles and that we can reach the neighboring towns enjoying the territory's
garden paths .
