Discover Corbins and its history from your holiday cottage
Corbins was for 40 years the front of the war between Christians and Muslims due to the fact that it is in the middle point between
Lleida and Balaguer. At that time, the term of Corbins covered much more territory than today and became a strategic point, since from Corbins and Castelldans you could see as far as Pilar d'
Almenara.
Ramon Berenguer III was in charge of the reconquest of the Corbins' lands, leaving one-third to the count of
Barcelona and two-thirds to the Anglesolas.
In 1143 Ramon Berenguer III gave a third of his third to the
Templars , who gradually gained power until they formed an order in Corbins.
What to visit in Corbins if you book a holiday cottage
The old part of Corbins corresponds to the area in front of the old Templar castle and, although it cannot be seen today, excavations have revealed that there had been a wall that protected the old town. Also, at the top of the town are the remains of what people say is the Pere Prison , which is thought to be part of the old Arab castle.
The ancient town of Corbins was left uninhabited because it was a battle line between Moors and Christians and, for this reason, a new town was later built at the foot of the hill with a new square and a main street.
You can visit the Parish Church that dates from 1637, although if you look carefully, you will see that there is another stone on the facade with the year 1635. Its bell tower is late. Next to the church, you can stop at the Fossat Vell viewpoint , a square built over the old cemetery and under which, in the center, the bones that were found were buried.
You can identify the parish houses of Cal Quira on Carrer La Creu, Cal Maciano on Carrer Major and Cal Fraret on Carrer del Riu. There is also Cal Comte , an old house at the foot of the old road, where Carrer de la Creu begins, which was owned by the Countess of Tàrrega and the Count of Urgell, who moved there for health reasons.
We also highlight the chapel of the Rock , some remains of the ancient Iberian town embedded in the surface of a rock and located next to the C-12 road and about 500 meters from the municipality.
The Roman town of Corbins
In Corbins there is an old Roman villa which is believed to have served the owners as a second home for summer. The Villa is located on one of the terraces of Tossal del Moro where a funerary monument has also been found, an example of the religious change of the time, from incineration to the humanization of the body in Christianity. This monument is a small temple intended for religious ceremonies with 4 underground chambers for the remains of the owners of the town.
An oil press has also been found within the grounds of the Roman town.
Book a rural house and enjoy the Parc del Riu
The River Park , located on the right bank of the Noguera Ribagorçana, has a large extension where we can find a football field, an athletics track, a children's park and a pleasant walking area for everyone. This green space, of more than 30,000 square meters, is located just 50 meters from the urban center and aims to honor the importance of water and well-being for the people since ancient times, where the Romans, Moors and Christians also rested there.
