Almacelles is an agricultural and livestock municipality. The history of the geography and the town took an important turn with the arrival of water in the municipality, through the
Catalonia and Aragon Canal in 1910.
The first inhabited area of Almacelles was the
Tossal del Vilot and it was most probably inhabited by the Romans, since the route of a
Roman road was discovered that linked
Lleida with Osca, passing through the current Almacelles. Also, it was an inhabited area in the Andalusian era and Ermengol VI d'Urgell was in charge of reconquering it.
During the
War of the Reapers , Almacelles was abandoned and the lands were used as battlefields until in 1773 a citizen of
Barcelona, Melcior de Guàrdia, was chosen for this task. Melcior undertook to build the church, a mill, a well and 40 houses in a period of 6 years. It was then that the town was organized according to an
orthogonal grid model , long before Ildefons Cerdà planned Barcelona's Eixample and Baron Haussmann imagined it in the city of Paris.
If you pass through Almacelles and notice that the town maintains almost all of its streets in perfect rectilinear harmony, do not hesitate to visit the MAU ( Museum of Architecture and Urbanism Josep Mas Dordal ), located in a beautiful noucentist building.
The historic center of Almacelles has no waste and was declared a cultural asset of national interest by the Generalitat de Catalunya in 2009. In the town square, there is the parish church of Our Lady of Mercè from the 18th century. And while on Carrer Major, there are the remains of the Palau dels Barons d'Esponellà on Carrer de la Mercè, several buildings from the first stage of the city stand out. The old Almacelles must be found in Tossal del Vilot , the first place to be occupied in the current town.
To get an idea of what we discussed before about the design of the city in an orthogonal grid and to take a reference of its dimensions, we recommend a walk along
Rambla d'Almacelles , with a length of 1.3 kilometers in length and 30 meters wide. It is a walk with views of remarkable buildings, fountains, sculptures and wonderful terraces to sit and have a drink.
Almacelles is full of
murals that decorate the houses and streets, most of them by the artist Oriol Arumí, and examples of the city reclaiming its characters, as seen in the
square Teresa Rodrigo i Anoro , a physics researcher of particles born in Almacelles.
Continuing with the grandeur of Almacelles,
Parc Europa offers tourists a public outdoor space of 2 and a half hectares and a lake 60 meters wide to walk around. It is an international sculptural space, an
open-air museum.In 2003, Almacelles inaugurated the
Water Park , one of the city's green areas in an area of 2000m2 with rolled steel sculptures (
"Red trees" ) and two small water ponds in the shape of a crescent .
And, finally, if you're in the mood for adventure, Almacelles has a
motocross circuit (La Mina) and a
shooting range in La Saira, within the same municipality.
