Things you might not know about Alguaire
Alguaire occupies the land of an ancient
Ilergeta town that developed an important role in the fight against the Romans and when the Romans won, it became an auxiliary bastion of the Popeans opposing Caesar, during the Battle of the Segre.
In 1250, it housed a
convent of Saint John's ladies , which welcomed Hospitallers from
Cervera and daughters of good Catalan families. The nuns left the convent during the Reaper War.

If you are in Alguaire, visit the Sacred Heart , at the top of La Penya, where you will find the remains of the old convent of the hospital nuns and the sculpture of the Sacred Heart , which contemplates the growth of the town, since 1966.
Another gem of Alguaire is the Hermitage of the Virgin of Merlí , from the 11th century and Visigoth style, which includes the image of the Virgin that had been worshiped in the old hospital monastery of the town.
In order to check the textile past of Alguaire, we encourage you to visit Mata de Pinyana , an old textile colony, inhabited until the seventies, on the banks of the canal of the same name.
And, of course, enjoy one of the localities with notable archaeological sites such as the Roques de So Roig Necropolis ; funerary structures excavated in the same rock built during the High Middle Ages (7th - 9th centuries).
