It is one of the most important tourist destinations on the Costa Brava, a town with an extensive cultural heritage and a rich gastronomic tradition. All this and more is what you will find in Palafrugell, in the Baix Empordà.
Palafrugell has a history worthy of being mentioned. At the outset, it should be borne in mind that the oldest remains found in the municipality is the dolmen of Can Mina dels Torrents , in Llafranc, from the years 3400-3000 BC. It is also known that a small Iberian town was established on the cape of Sant Sebastià, around the sixth century BC. The remains are exhibited at the Museu del Suro in Palafrugell and the Archaeological Research Service in Pedret. There are also vestiges of the Roman past in Llafranc: in 1980, archaeologists made a unique discovery in Catalonia: 78 raw roof tiles from the Roman era. The town, of course, was certainly born as a fortified place of defense. Although only the irregular layout of narrow streets is preserved from the Middle Ages. Already between the 15th and 18th centuries, when the danger came from pirates and corsairs, an extensive defensive network was built that is still preserved in the form of watchtowers and defenses.
Palafrugell is full of essentials. In fact, it has three places that are Cultural Assets of National Interest: the tower of Sant Sebastià and the tower of Can Mario and Port Bo de Calella. The tower of Sant Sebastià, by the way, is the oldest watchtower in the municipality. Construction began in 1441 and in the 18th century the sanctuary was built and a new church and an inn were added. It is also worth seeing the Cork Museum , the Can Mario Contemporary Art Space of the Vila Casas Foundation and the Josep Pla Foundation , which aims to publicize the writer's work. We cannot force that twenty minutes from Llafranc there is the dolmen of Can Mina dels Torrents, which dates between 3400 and 3000 BC.
If you spend a few days in Palafrugell, you can't miss the Jardins del Cap Roig . One of the most important gardens in the Mediterranean where you will find more than 500 botanical species. From the viewpoints you can also see the Formigues Islands. You can also walk through the Begur mountains and the Gavarres massif . In August, by the way, a night walk is organized there that starts and ends in La Bisbal de l'Empordà. If you prefer to spend a few hours at sea, you will find some of the best beaches on the Costa Brava in Calella de Palafrugell, such as Port Pelegrí or Golfet.
