The first document in which the toponym of Maià de Montcal appears, then Vila Maliano , is from the year 978, in a donation made by the count of Miró to the monastery of Besalú. At the southern limit of the municipal area we find the nucleus of Dosquers, which was an independent municipality until 1969, when it became part of Maià de Montcal. The politician and economist Ernest Lluch , who spent long periods in the town, is buried in the municipal cemetery.
