In the small town of Sant Ferriol, located in La Garrotxa and very close to Besalú, you can find very authentic holiday cottages and ideal tourist accommodation to enjoy this town known, above all, for the sanctuary of Santa Maria de Collell. A fantastic village for lovers of hiking and mountain biking.

What can I do in Sant Ferriol and its holiday cottages?

In the eastern half of the Garrotxa, to the right of the Fluvià River, we find an extensive municipality of just over two hundred inhabitants that is part of the Fluvià River Protected Natural Area. A fantastic town for lovers of active tourism.

The history of Sant Ferriol and its surroundings

It wasn't until 1857 that Ossinyà, Fares, Juïnyà, La Miana, El Torn and Sant Ferriol joined together and formed a single municipality that was called, curiously, Parish of Besalú until 1930, since they all depended ecclesiastically on the parish of Besalú. In fact, the history of the municipality is intrinsically linked with that of its churches and sanctuaries. It has a long tradition, for example, the sanctuary of Santa Maria de Collell, founded in the 12th century as a Benedictine priory. During the Spanish Civil War it served as a prison, a fact that the writer Javier Cercas talks about in 'Soldiers of Salamis'. The church is currently open for worship.

What to do during your stay at a tourist accommodation in Sant Ferriol

Get to know its architectural heritage

If you spend a few days in Sant Ferriol, you can already sign up for a few essentials. At the entrance, the ruins of the church of Sant Silvestre del Mor , documented as far back as the 10th century. Nor can you miss the church of Sant Miquel de la Miana , composed of a single nave covered by a barrel vault and circular apse, and that of Sant Fructuós d'Ossinyà , which was built in the twelfth century and renovated in 2001. And, obviously, you must visit the sanctuary de la Mare de Déu de Collell, an old Benedictine priory founded by the monastery of Sant Pere de Besalú in 12th century A sanctuary with a long history.

Hiking routes through the village

If you like hiking and mountain biking, you're in luck. Sant Ferriol is full of paths between valleys, streams and rivers ideal for walking or cycling. At the entrance, you can go up to the Sant Ferriol sanctuary to enjoy the spectacular views of La Garrotxa. But if you go there during the summer months, you can cool off in the Fluvià River Protected Natural Area . If you're traveling with a rascal, you can visit the Planeses organic farm, where they hold curd-making workshops.

JeroenCa l'Hortalà - With the family

Two weeks at Ca l'Hortalà, a perfect base for exploring Girona and beyond

We arrived at Ca l'Hortalà on the 17th of July and stayed for two full weeks, which turned out to be exactly the right amount of time to properly explore the region. The house itself is modern, spacious, and spotless, and having the small heated pool right there made all the difference in the July heat. We also made good use of the community swimming pool in the village, which was a nice way to cool off and get a bit of local flavor alongside the residents. Tortellà itself is small but has everything you actually need day to day. The local supermarket isn't big, but it covers the essentials without a hassle, so we didn't need to drive to a bigger town for basics. There are also a couple of good local bars in the village for a relaxed evening drink or a bite to eat, nothing fancy, but exactly the kind of authentic, low key atmosphere you want on a countryside stay. Its location in La Garrotxa made it an ideal base for day trips. We explored Figueres, Girona, and Besalú by car, all easy drives, and for Barcelona we took the train from Figueres, which was a relaxed and easy way to spend the day in the city without worrying about parking or traffic. Besalú in particular was a highlight, with its medieval bridge and old town feeling like stepping back in time, while Girona's cathedral and old quarter were well worth the wander. Figueres was a fun stop too, especially for anyone interested in Dalí. Coming back each evening to a quiet, comfortable house with the pool, the village bars, and everything within easy reach was the perfect way to end the day. Two weeks felt like enough time to properly settle in rather than rush from place to place, and the house and village together made that kind of relaxed pace easy. Highly recommend Ca l'Hortalà for anyone looking to use Tortellà as a base to explore Girona province. Barcelona is an easy train trip from Figueres if you'd rather skip the drive.

IreneLa Canova - With friends

4 days with friends and small children

The house has a somewhat uncomfortable layout. You have to be up and down the stairs all the time as the living area is upstairs. The rooms facing south or east, which are all but 2, get quite hot and the fans are not enough. The living area is very good, thanks to the air and its size, it is very comfortable. You have to be careful with the children with the electrified fence and the dogs can pass under the fence calmly.

Naturaki respond: Thank you very much, Irene, for sharing your opinion. We're glad you liked the day area and enjoyed it. We will take note of the heat in the rooms to see how we can improve it. We will also review the safety aspects you mentioned. We hope that, despite these details, you enjoyed your stay.

Magnificent stay, guaranteed return

Great stay, beautiful place. We will come back! Only downside: the 2 ovens deserve to be replaced because they heat very badly.

There have also been subsequent stays without any incidents related to this matter. However, thanks for letting us know. See you next time!

A magnificent cottage, a personal favorite

We were 17 adults and frankly, we loved this house. Angela, the person who received us, was very kind. The gardens are very well maintained and the pool is perfect. Frankly, I recommend it 100%. We will keep a very good memory of this place.

Very welcoming in a peaceful environment

We spent the weekend and we were able to enjoy the house more than we expected since it rained and we were forced to cancel the scheduled activities. Just to say that we will book again as we still have the activities postponed due to the rain pending. 5 very deserved stars.
