In the small town of Tortellà, located in la Garrotxa and very close to Besalú and Castellfollit de la Roca, you can find very authentic holiday cottages and tourist accommodation ideal for enjoying a peaceful getaway. A relatively modern town that is part of the Alta Garrotxa Protected Natural Area.

What can I do in Tortellà and its holiday cottages?

In the north-east of the Garrotxa region, between the Llierca river and the Juiàs stream, we find Tortellà. A relatively modern town, with modernist and noucentist style houses, which is part of the Alta Garrotxa Protected Natural Area.

The history of Tortellà and its surroundings

Although to the north of the town, in the cave of the bauma del Serrat, archaeological remains have been found that demonstrate the occupation of the territory as early as the Iron Age, the municipality appears documented for the first time in the 10th century under the toponym of Tortelianus. It is also worth mentioning the fire that the town suffered at the end of the 19th century, during the Carline wars, which is why Tortellà has a relatively modern architecture.

What to do during your stay at a tourist accommodation in Tortellà

Get to know its architectural heritage

If you spend a few days in Tortellà, we encourage you to stroll through the town's streets and observe the various modernist and noucentist style houses built to replace those burned down during the Carline Wars. It is also worth visiting the church of Santa Maria de Tortellà , from the 18th century, built over an earlier one from the Romanesque period. The current one is neoclassical. The main facade of the old Romanesque temple is preserved. Finally, just over three kilometers from the town, you will find the medieval bridge of Llierca , one of the symbols of the town.

Stroll through the village

If you feel like walking for a while, you can take a walk from Tortellà to the medieval bridge over the Llierca River, just over three kilometers away. You can also walk the small paths around the Juiàs creek, east of Tortellà. In addition, the Itinerànnia trail network offers a route of medium difficulty that goes from Tortellà to the Commons quarry.

Beautiful house in a great natural location

We spent a week in this large and beautiful house, decorated with great taste both outside and inside. Comfortable rooms and beds. A large kitchen with plenty of storage space and utensils. Gorgeous views from the pool and outdoor area, with a fantastic covered terrace.

Two weeks at Ca l'Hortalà, a perfect base for exploring Girona and beyond

We arrived at Ca l'Hortalà on the 17th of July and stayed for two full weeks, which turned out to be exactly the right amount of time to properly explore the region. The house itself is modern, spacious, and spotless, and having the small heated pool right there made all the difference in the July heat. We also made good use of the community swimming pool in the village, which was a nice way to cool off and get a bit of local flavor alongside the residents. Tortellà itself is small but has everything you actually need day to day. The local supermarket isn't big, but it covers the essentials without a hassle, so we didn't need to drive to a bigger town for basics. There are also a couple of good local bars in the village for a relaxed evening drink or a bite to eat, nothing fancy, but exactly the kind of authentic, low key atmosphere you want on a countryside stay. Its location in La Garrotxa made it an ideal base for day trips. We explored Figueres, Girona, and Besalú by car, all easy drives, and for Barcelona we took the train from Figueres, which was a relaxed and easy way to spend the day in the city without worrying about parking or traffic. Besalú in particular was a highlight, with its medieval bridge and old town feeling like stepping back in time, while Girona's cathedral and old quarter were well worth the wander. Figueres was a fun stop too, especially for anyone interested in Dalí. Coming back each evening to a quiet, comfortable house with the pool, the village bars, and everything within easy reach was the perfect way to end the day. Two weeks felt like enough time to properly settle in rather than rush from place to place, and the house and village together made that kind of relaxed pace easy. Highly recommend Ca l'Hortalà for anyone looking to use Tortellà as a base to explore Girona province. Barcelona is an easy train trip from Figueres if you'd rather skip the drive.

Guaranteed disconnection at a great house

The house is great. The water was a bit murky but they came to do maintenance soon. A bit far from Barcelona but the place is great and very quiet. Good option to disconnect.

Naturaki respond: We are very pleased to know that you liked the house and that the place allowed you to disconnect. We hope to have you back very soon!

'Unforgettable weekend in a quiet house'

Beautiful house, very well equipped (it has everything) and in a very quiet area. We spent most of the time at the impressive garden table and the pool. The barbecue was great. An unforgettable weekend.

Very welcoming in a peaceful environment

We spent the weekend and we were able to enjoy the house more than we expected since it rained and we were forced to cancel the scheduled activities. Just to say that we will book again as we still have the activities postponed due to the rain pending. 5 very deserved stars.

Very comfortable and totally recommendable

We loved our stay. The house is truly spectacular and has everything you need to feel comfortable and at ease. The care in every detail is noticeable and we enjoyed the experience immensely. The communication was excellent. As the only constructive comment, upon arrival we perceived a quite strong smell in the pantry. Everything was clean and in good condition, but the smell was a bit intense, similar to something rotten. We are sure it is something punctual and easy to check. Overall, we had an excellent experience and would definitely recommend the house.

Naturaki respond: Thank you very much for your positive assessment. We are glad to know that you enjoyed your stay and felt comfortable. Regarding the smell you noticed in the pantry upon arrival, we greatly appreciate you letting us know. We reviewed it immediately and even moved the fridge to thoroughly clean the entire space, and found no decomposing items. Thanks again for the trust and for recommending the house. We hope to welcome you back soon on another stay!.
