In the town of Begur, between Les Gavarres and the coast, we find some of the most beautiful and admired coves and beaches on the Costa Brava. A town that extends around an imposing medieval castle.
The origins of the town of Begur are to be found at the top of the castle, where some archaeological sites have appeared. Although the most emblematic are from the Middle Ages. The sea has always been a source of economic resources for Begur, through fishing and the sale of coral. It was precisely the crisis of the coral and agriculture that caused, already in the 19th century, a significant exodus of people from Begur to Cuba, the so-called Indians. The town's economic recovery came in the second half of the 20th century thanks to tourism.
Begur is full of must-sees. At the entrance, the medieval castle, which dates from the 11th century and is surrounded by narrow streets and four defense towers, the town towers, from the 16th and 17th centuries, declared a Historical and Artistic Monument. Other places of interest are the church of Sant Pere , from the 16th and 17th centuries, as well as some buildings built by the Indians as early as the 19th century. On the outskirts of Begur, we find the Mas d'en Pinc, which had been the residence of the dancer Carmen Amaya .
The beaches and coves of Begur are some of the most beautiful on the Costa Brava. Transparent waters, clean sand and bright sun is what you will find on beaches such as Aiguafreda, Illa Roja or Sa Tuna, where you will still find old fishermen's huts. They are ideal places for swimming, sailing, kayaking or diving.
