A historic town full of monuments, buildings and unique places. This is Avinyonet de Puigventós, a small town in the interior of Alt Empordà located very close to its capital, Figueres. Put on some good boots, get your camera ready and head to Avinyonet, there's no shortage of people!
Although Neolithic industries have been found, the first signs of settlement in Avinyonet date back to Roman times, as evidenced by the Roman villa of La Font del Vilar. However, the first reference to the town does not arrive until the year 962 and under another name, that of Sant Esteve de Manibulo or Sant Esteve de Manol. The second reference to the town, already as Avinyó, is the name of a character: Berenguer d'Avinyó, already in the 11th century. Probably the most outstanding fact in the history of this town in Alt Empordà is the castle of Avinyonet, which gave rise to the town and was attacked in 1128 by Count Ponç II d'Empúries. The name of the town, however, was Avinyó until the 13th century. The diminutive has been used since the 14th century. In 1916, the toponym of Puigventós was added to distinguish it from Avinyonet del Penedès.
Avinyonet de Puigventós is full of must-sees. At the entrance, you cannot miss the castle of la Comanda Hospitalera, a fortification built between the 16th and 17th centuries, and the church of Sant Esteve, a large monument with vestiges dating from the 15th to the 18th centuries and which, unlike of most Christian temples, it has an entrance to the east. It is also worth visiting the Roman villa of La Font del Vilar, a site from the Roman era located near the Manol river, the hermitage of Santa Eugènia, of Romanesque origin, and the remains of the castellot, an ancient medieval watchtower.
If you stay in a holiday cottage in Avinyonet de Puigventós, you can take the opportunity to tour, either on foot or by mountain bike, its surroundings, such as the Garriga d'Empordà natural area, where the plain of Empordà begins to mountain A typically Mediterranean location where you can discover traditional dry stone constructions. You can also go up to Puigventós and enjoy absolutely spectacular views of the Empordà plain.
