The history of Vilamalla and its surroundings

There is no record of Vilamalla until the High Middle Ages, specifically the year 974, when it is mentioned under the name of Villa Dalmalia. At that time, it was the property of the monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes and was part of the county of Empúries. It was always a small nucleus and, in fact, it did not reach a hundred inhabitants until the 18th century. From the 90s of the 20th century, however, the number of inhabitants increased considerably, reaching, today, almost 1200.

In Vilamalla you will find, above all, two essentials: the Romanesque church of Sant Vicenç, a temple from the 11th century, and the Batllia farmhouse, a 16th and 17th century farmhouse that preserves the remains of a square tower from the centuries XIII and XIV. It is supposed to have been the office and residence of the notary of Siurana. It is also worth visiting the old village washer, which has been rehabilitated.
