Although the first document in which the name of the town appears dates from the year 939, when Siurana was part of the county of Empúries, the archaeological remains of the 2nd and 1st centuries BC that have been found there show its Roman origin . It was not until the 15th century that it was first called Siurana d'Empordà, from the Vegueria de Girona, with a determinative with the aim of differentiating it from Siurana de Prades. Although in the first censuses of the 19th century it was registered in the population as Ciurana, in 1933, at the height of the Spanish Republic, the name Siurana d'Empordà was recovered. A change that annulled the Franco regime until 1983.
