Do you like medieval villages and mountain walks? In the region of Alt Empordà, in the upper Muga valley, we find Sant Llorenç de la Muga. A small medieval village surrounded by pines, oaks and oaks.
This Alt Empordà municipality, located just over 20 kilometers from Figueres, stands out, above all, for its medieval walled enclosure - in a very good state of conservation - as well as for the houses and streets of the old town. In fact, the urban center is included in the inventory of the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia.
It is not, however, the only relevant historical fact of Sant Llorenç de la Muga and is that in the 18th century, under the reign of Charles III, several foundries were created such as the Royal Foundry of Sant Sebastià de la Muga, dedicated to the production of ammunition and destroyed in the Battle of Sant Llorenç de la Muga, during the Roussillon War. Currently, the ruins of this foundry are covered by the Darnius - Boadella swamp.
In the old town of this small town in Alt Empordà you will find corners full of history: the wall, which has three entrance doors and four watchtowers - from which you can enjoy privileged views of the valley -, or its streets, such as the Barri, included in the inventory of the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia. Already outside the walls, we cannot miss the Castle of Sant Llorenç , documented in the 13th century, and the Torre de Guaita.
Scattered throughout this territory of mountains along the river, we can find small architectural treasures such as the hermitage of Sant Jordi, the oratory of Sant Ponç, the hermitage and the bridge of Sant Antoni near La Muga, the hermitage and the fountain Palau or the Old Bridge, among others.
If you are staying in a rural house in Sant Llorenç de la Muga, you can also choose to walk along its rural paths or go up to the castle of Sant Llorenç to contemplate the views of the area. It is an area so mountainous that, popularly, it is known as Garrotxa d'Empordà.
