In the eastern half of the Garrotxa, to the right of the Fluvià River, we find an extensive municipality of just over two hundred inhabitants that is part of the Fluvià River Protected Natural Area. A fantastic town for lovers of active tourism.
It wasn't until 1857 that Ossinyà, Fares, Juïnyà, La Miana, El Torn and Sant Ferriol joined together and formed a single municipality that was called, curiously, Parish of Besalú until 1930, since they all depended ecclesiastically on the parish of Besalú. In fact, the history of the municipality is intrinsically linked with that of its churches and sanctuaries. It has a long tradition, for example, the sanctuary of Santa Maria de Collell, founded in the 12th century as a Benedictine priory. During the Spanish Civil War it served as a prison, a fact that the writer Javier Cercas talks about in 'Soldiers of Salamis'. The church is currently open for worship.
If you spend a few days in Sant Ferriol, you can already sign up for a few essentials. At the entrance, the ruins of the church of Sant Silvestre del Mor , documented as far back as the 10th century. Nor can you miss the church of Sant Miquel de la Miana , composed of a single nave covered by a barrel vault and circular apse, and that of Sant Fructuós d'Ossinyà , which was built in the twelfth century and renovated in 2001. And, obviously, you must visit the sanctuary de la Mare de Déu de Collell, an old Benedictine priory founded by the monastery of Sant Pere de Besalú in 12th century A sanctuary with a long history.
If you like hiking and mountain biking, you're in luck. Sant Ferriol is full of paths between valleys, streams and rivers ideal for walking or cycling. At the entrance, you can go up to the Sant Ferriol sanctuary to enjoy the spectacular views of La Garrotxa. But if you go there during the summer months, you can cool off in the Fluvià River Protected Natural Area . If you're traveling with a rascal, you can visit the Planeses organic farm, where they hold curd-making workshops.
