Do you want to stroll through the alleys of a village with a medieval feel and enjoy the tranquility of Empordà? Towards Rupià there is a lack of people! A small town located just over 15 minutes from La Bisbal d'Empordà and close to Púbol and Ullastret.
Although the human presence in Rupià has been confirmed in the times of the Iberians and the Romans, thanks to the finds located in Mas Llorà, Can Quintana and the hill of Montori , the first documents in which this town appears are from the years 1128 and 1138 and is mentioned in Gureau de Rupià as a feudal lord. At the beginning of the 14th century, Parlavà and Ultramort were added to the castle of Rupià and, in the 17th century, the three towns formed the municipality of Rupià.
If you spend a few days in Rupià, you can already note its essentials: First, the wall , which protected the population in the 15th century. Currently, two of the portals are preserved, the one below and the one above, the base of a square tower and fragments of the walls. If you continue walking, you will find the episcopal castle-palace , built between the 14th and 15th centuries and which currently houses the Town Hall offices. Also from the 15th century is the church of Sant Vicenç , which is worth seeing. Walking through the town you will also find Gothic elements in many of the houses in the old town and in some farmhouses, such as Can Valls, Can Nató or Can Català.
If you feel like a good walk, we recommend the one that goes from Rupià to the olive tree of Mas Llorà . The olive tree, by the way, is incredible and is said to be one of the largest in the Mediterranean. If you want to take the car, you can take the opportunity to visit the archaeological site of Ullastret, one of the best-preserved Iberian villages in Catalonia or La Bisbal de l'Empordà and its Terracotta Museum of Ceramics.
