Remains of Roman settlements such as villas and tombs have been found throughout the territory of Puigpelat. However, the first written reference to the term does not appear until the year 1184. During part of its history it was under the rule of the order of Saint John of the Hospital of Jerusalem.

Popular festivals are deeply rooted among the inhabitants of Puigpelat. One of the best known is the Feast of Our Lady of the Milk, where many activities are held around the Puigpelat pine tree.
