Every part of Port de la Selva is totally formidable: its white-washed town centre, its harbour with boats, the first lighthouse on the Costa Brava, the incredible coves of the area and the village of La Selva de Mar. Its environment derived from the passage of years and history makes this place a sensational area to discover through our vacation rentals in the Alt Empordà.
Although the town of Port de la Selva is mentioned in writings from the monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes, it is not until the beginning of the 18th century that there is real evidence of urban life in the town.
The population probably grew because fishermen from other places began to build their houses near the port. In the middle of the 19th century, agriculture began to gain weight: mainly thanks to the ease with which wine and oil could be produced. However, in 1879 the plague of phylloxera also reached Port de la Selva and agricultural activity began to decline.
From the 20th century, agriculture took a back seat, and fishing and tourism began to take over as the town's main economic resources. Even well-known characters, such as Josep Maria de Segarra or Josep Maria Foix, were inspired by Port de la Selva in some of their works.
Today, tourism is the centre of economic activity in Port de la Selva. In this way, many urbanizations or nearby areas of Port de la Selva are really new, as they started to be built just over 20 years ago.
Port de la Selva is also known for its charming town centre with whitewashed houses like Cadaqués and for its harbour full of boats. This fact makes the town a totally idyllic place.
Being located in the middle of the Cap de Creus Natural Park, there is a wide range of routes and hiking trails in Port de la Selva. Suitable for all types of public and also suitable for every season.
Port de la Selva has a long list of beaches and coves to swim in, around 31 in total. All located in supernatural areas in the middle of Cap de Creus Natural Park. Its rocks and blue waters will blow your mind!
A few metres from the centre of Port de la Selva we find the famous lighthouse of Punta s'Arenella, the first lighthouse on the Costa Brava that we find if we trace the area from north to south. Taking the “camí de ronda” from Port de la Selva to Llança to the lighthouse is a very good option to enjoy the tranquillity of the surroundings.
Just two kilometres from Port de la Selva, is the village town of La Selva de Mar. The town, with just over 200 inhabitants, is a unique mediaeval spot where you can get lost in its hidden narrow streets.

Cadaqués is much more than a village to bathe on the beach. The beaches of Cadaqués are very rocky, but near the worldwide known picturesque village we find the bay of Portlligat with the island that lies ahead and of which Salvador Dalí was its best known inhabitant. There you will discover the Dali Museum house, where he lived, surrounded by forests and vegetation, a good starting point if you want to access some beautiful beaches around like Cala Sabolla (before the lighthouse Cala Nans). It is not difficult to access and is ideal for rest and relaxation. Here you can find one of the bests “chiringuitos” of Costa Brava.Roses
