The story of Pau and his surroundings

Pau's name has been documented since 982, in a precept of the Frankish king Lothar, where the possessions of the monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes are recognized. The toponym, by the way, has nothing to do with the Latin pax (which means peace), but could come from the Latin pagus ('rural district') or even derive from the patronymic Paulus, from palus ('pond ') or from the name of the peacock animal.

Get to know the town and its surroundings

If you stay in a holiday cottage in Pau, you have a few unmissables: At the entrance, the Romanesque church of Sant Martí , from the 11th and 13th centuries, as well as the houses of the old town, many from the 17th and 18th centuries, with barns in the upper part and cellars in the lower ones. You also can't miss the White Cross, from the 15th century, a remarkable cross carved in limestone, which, together with the cylindrical pillar that supports it, exceeds three meters in height. It is the only one of the old territory of the monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes that is preserved in its entirety. Near this cross you will also find a dolmen that bears the same name. However, a short distance from the Puig de l'Home you can visit the tomb of the runner in the Margalla hill.

If you like active tourism, don't hesitate for a second: Let yourself be seduced by the beauty of the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà Natural Park and the lakes of Vilaüt. A passage and nesting place for many birds and, therefore, of great ornithological interest. You can't miss the path to Sant Pere Rodes either, from where you'll have spectacular views of the Empordà plain.
