Surrounded by agricultural fields and with the sea close by, we find the small town of Fortià. A municipality in the Alt Empordà close to Castelló d'Empúries and the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà ideal for a quiet and rural getaway.
Although it is known that Fortià was crossed by the Via Heraclea that linked Cádiz with Rome, its church is mentioned for the first time in 1150. Much of its architectural heritage dates from the modern era, from the 16th to XVIII and XIX, due to the great destruction caused by the flood of 1421 and the different wars that the Empordà suffered, from the War of the Reapers to the Carline wars. The town's long agricultural tradition is embodied in the old Escola de Fortianell farm, of neoclassical style and unique in Catalonia, which brought innovations that renewed agriculture.
Within the urban core of Fortià we find several vestiges of its past. Starting with the church of Sant Julià and Santa Basilissa, late Gothic style and built in the 15th and 16th centuries, after the floods of 1421 left the previous Romanesque building damaged. It is also worth seeing Casa Gran de Ferrer or Casa de la Reina Sibil·la, a large mansion built by the knight Pere Ignasi Ferrer, and Casa del Delme, from the 18th century.
A good way to get to know the plains of Emporda is to take routes on foot or by mountain bike through Fortià and its surroundings, such as the Fortianell farm-school. Today it is a private farm, but the surroundings are worth seeing. Although you can also go to Castelló d'Empúries or discover the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà at the stroke of a pedal.
