Do you want to discover a medieval castle, walk historic paths and discover typical churches and farmhouses in the Empordà? Towards Foixà there are not enough people! A small municipality in the Baix Empordà bordering, to the west, Gironès and bathed by the Ter river.
Despite the remains of the times of the Iberians and the Romans, the history of the town of Foixà as we know it today begins in the Middle Ages. Foixà, initially, belonged to the county of Girona, then to that of Empúries and the Barony of Foixà and, finally, it passed into the hands of the Bishopric of Girona and the monastery of Santa Maria d'Amer . The current grouping of towns that make up Foixà (Cuells, la Sala, Sant Llorenç de les Arenes and les Masos) dates from 1857. For a few years, until 1924, Ultramort was also part of the municipality.
If you stay in a holiday cottage in Foixà, you have a few unmissable things to see: First, the castle , built in the 13th century. Although it is currently a private home. You can also visit the Cross of King John I the Hunter, a Gothic-style terminus cross dedicated to King John I, who died in Foixà Castle in 1396 after being injured in a hunting accident. In Cuells you will find two buildings that are worth seeing: Can Ribot , a 16th century farmhouse with a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary and the 16th century parish church of Sant Joan . In Sant Llorenç de les Arenes, you will find the church of Sant Llorenç , which was built in the 12th and 13th centuries and has a characteristic Romanesque structure.
You can also take advantage of the quiet stay in the municipality of Foixà to re-launch several hiking and mountain biking routes, such as the one that goes from the church of Sant Joan de Foixà to the church of Santa Maria de la Sala. Another option is to go from Sant Llorenç de les Arenes to the river Ter, in the municipality of Colomers.
