The history of Els Massos de Pals and its surroundings

The first documentation that mentions Pals is from the end of the 9th century and mentions the town and the castle. Although many of the main buildings are of Romanesque origin, many were restored in the Gothic period. Despite everything, the destruction during the Civil War, between 1936 and 1939, was so great that the old town was abandoned and the reconstruction took thirty years. The toponym, by the way, comes from the Latin palus , which means "marshy land".

If you stay in a holiday cottage in Els Massos de Pals you cannot miss the historic center of Pals, el Pedró , which was completely restored after being badly damaged during the Spanish Civil War. It is worth walking through its typically medieval alleys, where you will find many craft shops and art galleries. Four towers from the twelfth century are still standing on the wall, and the romantic-style Tower of the Hours is preserved from the castle. Nearby you will find the church of Sant Pere de Pals , also rebuilt with Gothic elements.

At the start we recommend that you go to the Josep Pla viewpoint, from where you can enjoy exceptional views of the Empordà plain and the Medes Islands . If you want a beach, Pals is very long and ideal for water sports such as windsurfing. If what you want is to take some good photographs, you can't miss the Coll ponds, wetlands located at the old mouth of the Daró river. You can also walk through the rice paddies, through the paths that border the crops.
