To the south of the Sierra de l'Albera and very close to La Jonquera, we find the small town of Cantallops. A town full of history surrounded by nature that will fascinate lovers of active and cultural tourism.
Cantallops was born in 942, under the name of Cantalupis, around the castle, now gone. The megalithic route of the Requesens dolmens, which goes all the way to Jonquera, demonstrates, however, human settlement during the Neolithic. As a historical curiosity, on the night of January 27, 1939, at the end of the Spanish Civil War, the politician Antoni Rovira i Virgili , his family and other deputies of the Parliament of Catalonia, spent the night in a farmhouse in the village, the Bell-loc, on the way to exile.
If you stay in a holiday cottage in Cantallops, you will notice that it is made of stone, and still preserves the medieval layout. However, it is worth walking through the town and going to the wall, right in the center of the village, the Plaça del Fort, the Plaça Major and the church of Sant Esteve, the former chapel of the fortress. You can also take the opportunity to get to know the old monastery of Sant Bartomeu de Bell-lloc , of which there are few remains, or the Mas Bell-lloc, a large house completely renovated with a typical modernist style.
Cantallops is in a privileged and transitional area, between the Sierra de l'Albera and the Empordà plain. So if you like walking, you're in luck. You can tour the Albera Natural Reserve or learn about the area's springs, such as the Solana spring, the Tina spring, the Ferreret spring or the Nova spring.
If you love history, this is a tour not to be missed. Of course, it includes archaeological remains belonging to Cantallops and La Jonquera. The Cantallops dolmens are those of Collet de Baix, Coll de Medàs I, Coma de Gall, Coll del Medàs III and Puig Gros.
