In the north of Baix Empordà, very close to Ullastret and Corçà, we find the small municipality of Parlavà. A town with two fortified churches ideal for family walks, between farmland and oak forests.
Parlavà is mentioned for the first time in the 11th century under the names of Palau Rafano and Palau Ravani. Over the years, the toponym evolved and changed to Palatii Rafani, Palatio Ravani, Palaravano, Palaraffano and Parlavano. In 1314 it was acquired by the bishop of Girona and became dependent on Rupià. During the Middle Ages, Fonolleres - a municipality that is part of Parlavà -, belonged to the lords of Torroella de Montgrí, the bishopric of Girona and the counts of Empúries.
If you spend a few days in a holiday cottage in Parlavà, you cannot miss the two fortified churches. On the one hand, that of Sant Feliu , located in the center of the town and built between the 12th and 13th centuries and fortified during the 14th century. The most remarkable elements are the apse window and those added to the 14th century fortification, such as the matacà, stakes and loopholes. In Fonolleres you will find another beautiful fortified Romanesque church, that of Sant Cristòfol . On the walls, as in the church of Sant Feliu de Parlavà, you can see loopholes and arrowheads which show that it was also a fortress.
You can also take advantage of your stay in Parlavà to visit the small hill where vestiges of an Ibero-Roman village from the 10th century have been found, to the north of the town. It is an ideal walk to take with the baby, between agricultural fields and oak forests. It is also worth going to the neighboring town of Ullastret and visiting the archaeological site , one of the most important in Catalonia.
