Do you want to walk through the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà and the mouth of the Fluvià river? Towards L'Armentera there is a lack of people! It is a small town in Alt Empordà located less than ten kilometers from l'Escala and just over twenty from Figueres. A town on the Empordà plain where you can enjoy a quiet, rural getaway.
L'Armentera, which etymologically means 'land of large herds' , is mentioned for the first time in a document in 822, under the name of Armentaria. During the War of Succession, it was occupied by the French troops of the Duke of Noailles. Later, it was attacked by the forces of Philip V and, a century later, in 1839, a battle of the first Carline War took place there. One hundred years later, during the Spanish Civil War, it was occupied by Franco's troops.
If you like cultural tourism and feel like walking around a bit, you can't miss the church of Sant Martí de l'Armentera, a neoclassical building from the 19th century that preserves several paintings by Joan B. Panyó, precursor of the School d'Olot, the most prominent Catalan landscape school. The Armentera mill, a very well-preserved 18th century building, is also worth visiting.
L'Armentera is located on the alluvial plain at the mouth of the Fluvià river, a fantastic area for family walks and hiking. In addition, it is very close to the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà and, therefore, you can take advantage of your stay in a holiday cottage in L'Armentera to visit the popular Marjalen area. The most important in Catalonia after the Ebro delta. If you are fond of photography, don't forget your camera: the light in the place is exceptional. And if you like ornithology, you should know that the best times to observe birds are morning and dusk and that the times when there are more species are those of migration.
