La Sala is a neighborhood in the town of Foixà located halfway between Parlavà and Ultramort. Despite its size, it is made up of two small neighbourhoods: La Sala de Baix, which gathers around the church, and Sala de Dalt, made up of a group of farmhouses. All in all, this is an ideal villa for a quiet and rural stay in the heart of the Empordà.
The history of Foixà, as we know it today, goes back to the Middle Ages. Even so, it should be noted that the nets found demonstrate the presence of man since the time of the Iberians and the Romans. The current grouping of towns that make up the municipality (Sant Llorenç de les Arenes, La Sala and Foixà) dates from 1857. In 1860, Ultramort was added, but after years of disputes, it was segregated again in 1860 1924
The main buildings in the neighborhood of La Sala are the parish church of Santa Maria , from the 18th century, and Mas Geli , a large house from the 15th century. Even so, it is worth walking through the town and reaching Foixà, where you can see, for example, the castle, built in the 13th century - currently a private residence -, the Cross of King John I the Hunter , of Gothic style and dedicated to King Joan I, who died in Foixà Castle in 1396. If you go to Sant Llorenç de les Arenes, don't miss the church of Sant Llorenç , built between the 12th and 13th centuries.
If you love hiking and mountain biking, you're in luck. In the municipal area of Foixà you can do several itineraries, some focusing on historical heritage and others on the landscape. You can go from the church of Sant Joan de Foixà to the church of Santa Maria de La Sala or go from Sant Llorenç to Colomers along the banks of the river Ter.
