If you want to discover a fluvial landscape in the middle of the Baix Empordà and try your luck with the golf clubs, Gualta is full of people!
Although, as indicated by the archaeological site of Font Pascuala, the area of Gualta had already been inhabited in the time of the Iberians, the town's history dates back to the Middle Ages. It appears mentioned for the first time in 1046, when the knight Ermengol Bernat de Fornells bequeathed the lands of the parish of Santa Maria d'Aqualta to the canons of the cathedral of Girona. In the 17th century, the counts of Peralada built the mill to bring water from the Ter to the Daró and, already in the seventies of the last century, a new canal was built to prevent flooding in the cultivated fields.
Gualta is full of must-sees: At the entrance, to the north of the town you will find the medieval bridge over the Daró River, built between the 16th and 17th centuries. Right next to it, by the way, you will find a commemorative monolith of the French War . Inside the town it is worth visiting the neoclassical church of Santa Maria and, already to the south of the town, the old mill built in the 17th century by the counts of Peralada which preserves parts of the medieval fortress on which it was built, probably the ancient castle of Gualta.
If you're staying in a holiday cottage in Gualta, you can't miss the Ruta del Ter , which links the Pyrenees with the Mediterranean and is a little over two hundred kilometers long. As you pass through Gualta, you can see infrastructure related to the water channel. If you like golf, you will find the Camp d'Empordà Golf and the Pitch & Putt Gualta.
