Beach and mountain. It is what you will find in Calonge i Sant Antoni. In the interior, and at the foot of the Gavarres massif, the old town of Calonge, a quiet village with a medieval aftertaste. On the coast, in front of the sea, Sant Antoni, full of active proposals. Tranquility and adventure at the same time. An ideal town for family holidays.
Calonge appears mentioned, for the first time, in the year 881 under the name of Colinico . It was not, however, until the 13th century when the town was located on the map of medieval Catalonia, under the power of the barons of Cruïlles and, subsequently, of Palamós. Piracy, as early as the 15th century, wreaked havoc in Calonge, causing depopulation and the need to build new coastal neighborhoods, such as Sant Antoni. A town, the latter, which experienced remarkable growth following the expansion of the cork industry. Sant Antoni, by the way, was independent from Calonge during the Civil War, but later reintegrated into it. During those years, by the way, it received the name Llevantí de Mar.
If you're staying in a holiday cottage in Calonge i Sant Antoni, you can't miss, above all, Calonge Castle, from the 11th century, one of the most beautiful fortresses in the area. In addition, the old center of the town preserves a large part of the layout of medieval streets. Also of interest are the historical remains in the municipality, such as the Puigsesforques dolmen, one of the country's largest megaliths, or the remains of an Iberian village, near the medieval fortress of Castellbarri.
First, you can take advantage of your stay in Sant Antoni to visit Torre Valentina, an old watchtower located in the neighborhood of Treumal. You can also swim at the beaches of Sant Antoni, such as Cala Roques Planes or Cala Cap Roig and, of course, choose to walk the Camí de Ronda from Torre Valentina, following the GR-92.
