In the north-east of the Garrotxa region, we find Argelaguer, an ideal place for lovers of quiet walks, both for its old quarter and for the sidewalks of its streams and torrents. You can also visit archaeological sites and a rich architectural heritage.
Argelaguer is documented, for the first time, as Argelagarios, in the year 982, but its origins go back much earlier, since in the area of Can Xac there is a site that proves the human presence since the age of the Bonze . The Romans also occupied the territory, as evidenced by the Roman silos found in the area. In the Middle Ages the town belonged to the Montpalau family, who built a castle and a fortified house.
If you stay in holiday cottages in Argelaguer, you have a few essentials: At the entrance the church of Santa Maria , a Romanesque temple next to a river and several meters above sea level. Just afterwards you will find the fortified house of the Montpalaus, a 15th century building that is worth seeing. Also built by the same family, you can walk a little to visit the remains of Montpalau Castle , to the south of the town, on a small hill. If you still want to see more, you can't miss the chapel of Magdalena, the Romanesque church of Mare de Déu del Guilar , and several farmhouses in the village, such as Ca n'Olives, Mas Espoella, Mas Moretó, Plandiura or La Mata
If you like hiking or cycling, you're in luck: Itinerànnia , a network of trails that includes the districts of Ripollès, Garrotxa and Alt Empordà offers several routes from Argelaguer. One of the most popular runs through the scenes of the Carline Wars and is about three kilometers long. There is also another, shorter one, which will bring you closer to the Garrell park , designed by the local artist Josep Pujiula i Vila. If you are good at walking, do not hesitate to do the one that goes from the village of Argelaguer to the church.
