Do you want to discover Empordà, Garrotxa and Canigó? Towards Albanyà there is a lack of people! This small town located in the Muga valley, to the north-west of Alt Empordà and very close to Garrotxa, is known as Garrotxes d'Empordà and is an ideal town for walks and walks .
Albanyà has been inhabited since prehistoric times, as evidenced by various archaeological remains, such as the Pólvora cave site and the megalithic tomb. However, it appears documented for the first time, under the name of Albaniano, in the year 869. Albanyà has been listed as a parish since the 13th century. Afterwards, it came under the jurisdiction of the Viscounts of Rocabertí and, at the end of the 17th century, it became part of the county of Peralada.
The Sanctuary of Mare de Déu del Mont was, according to the writer Jacint Verdaguer, the most beautiful in all of Catalonia. It is a late Romanesque sanctuary, made up of a single nave with a buttressed vault. From the sanctuary you can see all of Empordà, Garrotxa and Canigó. So, you know: Don't forget your camera!
In Albanyà you will find many interesting monuments, such as the church of Sant Pere, a good example of primitive Romanesque, the monastery of Sant Llorenç de Sous, the sanctuary of Mare de Déu del Fau,, documented since 1407 or the temple of Sant Cristòfol dels Horts, currently in very poor condition.
Albanyà has great rural beauty. And if you like hiking, you're in luck. At the entrance, you can take the Salines-Bassegoda route , which reaches the two sanctuaries: that of Mare de Déu del Fau, from the 15th century, and that of Mare de Déu del Mont. From both you will have spectacular views. You can also walk through the La Muga Nature Reserve , which originates in Albanyà.
