When you think of the city of Tarragona, you probably think of the beaches of the Costa Daurada, the Roman patrimony and its gastronomy. But did you know that the province is also a paradise for lovers of bicycle touring and hiking? The greenways of Tarragona are old train lines converted into itineraries that cross spectacular landscapes, from the mountain to the sea. Whether you are an expert with your bike or if you just want to go for a calm walk, these routes will allow you to enjoy nature at your own pace. Let's go!

Green Way of Val de Zafán

This is, undoubtedly, one of the most emblematic greenways of the province of Tarragona. With a route of over 82 kilometres, it connects the regions of Matarranya in Aragón with the Delta de l'Ebre, passing through Terra Alta and the Ribera d'Ebre. The greenway of the Val de Zafán will allow you to enjoy stunning landscapes of vineyards and mountains. It starts at La Puebla de Híjar Station and ends in Tortosa, where you can continue on the bike lane to the greenway of Carrilet de la Cava. One of the mandatory stops during the route is Horta de Sant Joan, the village that captivated Picasso.

Greenway of Baix Ebre

The Greenway of Baix Ebre is a route of great natural beauty that follows the course of the Ebro river between Benifallet and Tortosa. With approximately 25 km and 19 tunnels, some of which require the use of a flashlight, the first part of the route in Benifallet is especially spectacular, with a wooded and rugged landscape that reminds of the surroundings of the Greenway of Terra Alta, with which it connects. As the route progresses towards Xerta, the Ebro River becomes the undisputed protagonist, surrounded by fruit fields and dry lands, which extend beyond Aldover. In the final stretch, the greenway delves into more inhabited areas, passing through the towns of Jesús and Roquetes, until reaching Tortosa.

Greenway of Terra Alta

The Terra Alta Greenway is a spectacular 23.7 kilometre route that follows the old railway line between Arnes-Lledó and Pinell de Brai, crossing the Pàndols and Cavalls mountain ranges, with the Canaleta river as the guiding thread. This route, perfect for both walking and cycling, allows you to enjoy the natural beauty of the region, with views of the Ports mountains and the landscape of vineyards and olive groves characteristic of the area. The landscape reserves impressive surprises, with rural environments alternating with extensive wooded areas of abrupt relief and corners of practically virgin places where silence is the protagonist. In addition, it also passes through various monuments and places of interest, such as the Fontcalda sanctuary. An ideal itinerary for cycling and hiking enthusiasts who want to discover the nature and historical heritage of the Terra Alta.

Green Way of the Ebro Delta

The Green Way of the Ebro Delta is a quiet and accessible path that connects the town of l'Aldea with the Natural Park of the Ebro Delta, offering a unique experience in one of the most spectacular landscapes of Catalonia. It is a route that is divided into several sections: Section 1 (l'Aldea-Lligallos) has a length of 1,870 meters and follows the old railway layout, transforming into a walk that honors the history of the railway in the region. This section includes an old train carriage as a monument in tribute to the workers of the original station, as well as the building of the old station, which now houses a tourist office. The area also has a motorhome area and is located near the urban center of l'Aldea. The Section 2 (Lligallos-Camarles) is in the process of conditioning and, when complete, will expand the route and offer a longer journey to explore the surroundings. Finally, the Section 3 (Camarles-L'Ampolla) is also undergoing refurbishment and will connect the route to the coast, reaching up to L'Ampolla. This final section is the one which is ideal for cyclists, hikers, and nature lovers who want to explore the Ebro Delta on an easy, accessible route full of landscaped diversity.

Greenway of the Carrilet de la Cava

The Carrilet de la Cava Greenway is a 7.31 km route that begins on the outskirts of Tortosa and follows the old railway line, parallel to the irrigation canal on the left bank of the Ebro river. One of the main attractions of the route is the tower of Font de Quinto, in Campredó, built in the 14th century, which oversees the estuary entrance to Tortosa. The route ends in the area of La Pedrera, in l'Aldea, where it connects with the Natural Path of the Ebro, which allows further exploration of the natural landscapes of the Ebro Delta.

The greenways of Tarragona are a perfect way to discover the province in a sustainable and healthy way. Whether following the course of the Ebre river, crossing mountains or pedaling among rice fields, each route has its charm and a story to tell. So prepare your bicycle or sneakers, find the best rural house and immerse yourself in a journey full of nature, history and gastronomy. See you on two wheels!
