In the middle of the Empordà plain, on the north bank of the Ter and next to the Montgrí massif , we find the small town of Verges known, above all, for its Holy Week celebrations and, in particular, for the procession and the famous Dance of Death An ideal town for active tourism that seems to stand still in time.
The castle of Verges has been documented since the twelfth century as the possession of the counts of Empúries. The town, in fact, was the subject of a long dispute between the county of Empúries and the bishopric of Girona that lasted until 1402. At that time, Verges became part of the royal domain. In 1694 it was the scene of the battle of Verges or El Ter, in the context of the War of Independence.
If you are staying in a holiday cottages in Verges, we recommend that you walk around the poor and get lost in its alleys. In Plaça Major you will find, for example, remains of the wall. An entrance gate to the walled enclosure, a square tower from the 13th-14th centuries and another circular tower from the 15th-16th centuries are still standing and identifiable . The parish church of Sant Julià and Santa Basilisa is also worth seeing.
If you like hiking or mountain biking, you're in luck! Verges has a wide range of active tourism, especially following the course of the Ter River through the town. There you will find paths that run parallel to the river and will allow you to reach the Gola del Ter. However, it is also worth visiting Verges during Holy Week and enjoying the Dance of Death , a religious spectacle that has been celebrated in the town's streets since the High Middle Ages. The five dancers, dressed as skeletons, dance in the light of torches and to the sound of a timpani. A magical show.
