To the west of the Montgrí massif and very close to Torroella de Montgrí, we find the small town of Ullà, a town that has an interesting architectural heritage of medieval origin and is ideal for hiking and mountain biking routes .
The finds made in the Duke's cave demonstrate the human presence in Ullà since the Paleolithic. In addition, architectural remains from the Roman period have also been discovered. Even so, the first document in which the town is mentioned is from the year 834 and it is listed as Olianus, land of olive trees. At that time it belonged to the bishopric of Girona, although the county of Empúries disputed it on several occasions. In 1121 the Augustinian canonry of Santa Maria was founded in the south of the town.
If you spend a few days in a rural accommodation in Ullà, you cannot miss the old church of Sant Andreu , which is currently the headquarters of the cultural centre. It is of pre-Romanesque origin and is worth visiting inside. Very close you will find the church of Santa Maria , built between the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century, which in its day housed the Augustinian community of the old canonry of Santa Maria. It is also worth taking a walk through the streets of the old town, where you can see the portal of Carrer Muntanya, one of the old entrances to the town of Ullà, as well as several houses such as the one on Carrer Sant Antoni, in Renaissance style and built in 1512. By the way: In the in the highest part of the village is Mas Xiquet, an impressive 18th century farmhouse that is believed to have been owned by the writer Víctor Català .
If you love hiking, you can't miss the climb to Puig Rodó, located in the Montgrí massif and in front of Montgrí Castle. From the village, it is approximately seven kilometers round trip. The Ruta del Ter is also worthwhile, which invites you to cross the river to the mouth on foot or by mountain bike along the bank. Even kayaking from the water!
