In the north-east of the Garrotxa region, between the Llierca river and the Juiàs stream, we find Tortellà. A relatively modern town, with modernist and noucentist style houses, which is part of the Alta Garrotxa Protected Natural Area.
Although to the north of the town, in the cave of the bauma del Serrat, archaeological remains have been found that demonstrate the occupation of the territory as early as the Iron Age, the municipality appears documented for the first time in the 10th century under the toponym of Tortelianus. It is also worth mentioning the fire that the town suffered at the end of the 19th century, during the Carline wars, which is why Tortellà has a relatively modern architecture.
If you spend a few days in Tortellà, we encourage you to stroll through the town's streets and observe the various modernist and noucentist style houses built to replace those burned down during the Carline Wars. It is also worth visiting the church of Santa Maria de Tortellà , from the 18th century, built over an earlier one from the Romanesque period. The current one is neoclassical. The main facade of the old Romanesque temple is preserved. Finally, just over three kilometers from the town, you will find the medieval bridge of Llierca , one of the symbols of the town.
If you feel like walking for a while, you can take a walk from Tortellà to the medieval bridge over the Llierca River, just over three kilometers away. You can also walk the small paths around the Juiàs creek, east of Tortellà. In addition, the Itinerànnia trail network offers a route of medium difficulty that goes from Tortellà to the Commons quarry.
