Do you like history and want to understand the agricultural landscape of Empordà? Sant Miquel de Fluvià, a small town of just over 800 inhabitants, is one of the towns in the interior of the plain with more charm. A curiosity: It is called so because the river Fluvià passes through the village.
It wasn't until the 11th century, when the monastery of Sant Miquel was created, that Sant Miquel de Fluvià was born, a small town located on the western edge where the Alt Empordà alluvial plain ends. It is a small town with a great historical legacy: the Roman oven (one of the best preserved in Catalonia), the chapel or hermitage of Sant Sebastià, an 18th century construction built with a barrel vault and semicircular head, and, finally, the aforementioned monastery of Sant Miquel, a historic Romanesque monument worth seeing.
Located in the middle of the town, right next to the town hall, the monastery of Sant Miquel is a Romanesque temple declared a cultural asset of national interest. Built in the 11th century, fortified in the 14th century, during the Catalan Civil War, and reformed in the 17th, it consists of the Romanesque church, the bell tower and a cloister. In one of the side altars, by the way, a Gothic image of the Virgin Mary is preserved.
If you're staying in a holiday cottage in Sant Miquel de Fluvià, you can't miss the Clos Miquel Roman oven. It is a single-chamber vertical kiln that was used to bake household ceramics and construction materials. It functioned during the 1st and 2nd centuries AD and, according to historians, must have been located near a population center that has not yet been located today.
