In the middle of Garrotxa, north of the Fluvià river, we find the small town of Sant Jaume de Llierca, an ideal town for hiking lovers.
Sant Jaume de Llierca is mentioned for the first time in the middle of the 10th century. The church of Sant Jaume, on the other hand, is documented in 1169. In 1463, under the reign of King John II, the town of Sant Jaume de Llierca became part of the crown as a parish. In the middle of the 19th century, the textile factory La Brutau was built, which gave an economic boost to the municipality.
If you spend a few days in Sant Jaume de Llierca, you cannot miss the following must-sees: at the entrance, the church of Sant Jaume de Llierca, built in the mid-19th century and characterized, above all, by its neo-Romanesque facade and bell tower . It is also worth walking a little to the outskirts to see the chimney and channel of the old La Brutau factory , closed in 1973. Finally, you can get close to the remains of Montpalau Castle and the Santa Magdalena hermitage from where you will have spectacular views of the Garrotxa region.
Do you like hiking? In Sant Jaume de Llierca there are several signposted trails, which can be done both on foot and by bike. We can start with an excursion to the hermitage of Santa Magdalena , located two kilometers from the town and from where you will have a good panoramic view of La Garrotxa. Don't forget your camera! In addition, the Itinerànnia trail network has several routes through the town, such as the Montagut path , ideal for children. Less than a kilometer from the town, right next to the Fluvià river, you will find the Puda spring , a sulphurous water source. You will also find benches and tables for a picnic.
