The Castle of Sales appears documented for the first time in the 11th century. And there is evidence that in the 13th century its jurisdiction included, in addition to Sales, the parishes of Tortellà, Sadernes, Entreperes, Gitarriu and Monteia. The Barony of Sales originated when, in the 11th century, the Count of Besalú granted the title to one of his vassals.
