To the south of the Gulf of Roses and very close to the Baix Empordà, we find L'Escala. A town with spectacular beaches that still retains the charm of the old town and that we know above all for Sant Martí d'Empúries, a neighborhood dependent on l'Escala, and for the site of the ruins of Empúries.
At the outset, it should be borne in mind that L'Escala contains the ruins of Empúries in its municipal area, the gateway to Greco-Roman culture and civilizations in the Iberian Peninsula. And it wasn't until a century after the disappearance of the count house of Empúries, in the 17th century, that L'Escala was born as a fishing neighborhood of Sant Martí d'Empúries. Although its use as a port is more remote. The name, in fact, from the Latin Scala, designated a port or wharf. In 1766, L'Escala was already the capital of the municipality. The cause? The extraordinary population growth, favored by a very high county immigration, attracted by the jobs generated by maritime customs, fishing, anchovy and sardine salting and wine export, among others.
The old town of l'Escala is, without any doubt, an obligatory stop: You can visit the parish church of Sant Pere, the old sailor's cemetery, the Alfolí de la Sal building , the Casa Albert (where the writer Víctor Català was born and died) or the Torre del Pedró, a defense tower against piracy declared a Cultural Property of National Interest and documented since 1543. It is also worth visiting the fishermen's houses, some open to the public, and popular and simple architecture. And, obviously, you can't leave L'Escala without tasting some of its anchovies, which have their own designation of origin.
If you stay in a holiday cottage in L'Escala, you can't miss Sant Martí d'Empúries, the origin of today's L'Escala, which preserves part of the old medieval wall, remains of the castle and stately homes. And, obviously, the ruins of Empúries, where the remains of a Greek city and a Roman city are preserved. In addition, there are dramatized and family visits in different languages during the summer.
