Located between the mouths of the Muga and Fluvià rivers, on the Empordà plain, the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà is a delight in the eyes of nature and birdwatching lovers. Nowadays, when we're all on the rush, spending a day at the Aiguamolls will make you slow down and contemplate the beauty of this natural park. It was created in 1983, occupying a surface area of 4,729 hectares (of which more than 800 are an integral nature reserve, such as those of the Estanys or of Les Llaunes) and is one of the natural spaces in Catalonia where a major variety of animal species can be observed.
Open every day from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm in winter and from 9:00 am to 6:30 pm in summer. It has two visitor areas: the itinerary that goes from Cortalet and that of Vilaüt. The two routes will allow you to see a large diversity of fauna (especially ornithological), as well as to make numerous stops to contemplate the fabulous landscape. The park has a total of 17 observatories. The birds are the protagonists of the park, since the Aiguamolls become their place of rest and shelter. So far 329 bird species have been cited (many of them protected and of great beauty), of which 82 are nesting on a regular basis. A large number of bird species nestle between the dunes of the park, of great importance as a refuge for migratory birds, such as the white stork, the mallard, the grey heron and the coot.
The observation of migratory birds occurs in its maximum splendor between the months of March and May or between August and October and the best hours to observe them are morning and evening. Good binoculars will help you observe the birds, but don't worry if you don't have any, you can rent at the information center.
In order tease the access to the park, visits are regulated through the Information Center of the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà Natural Park, between the towns of Castelló d'Empúries and Sant Pere Pescador, located in an old farmhouse . The park also has a meteorological center and a payment parking lot. From Cortalet you can also start walking and cycling routes to the Aiguamolls, that will make you discover beautiful places. The most important thing is to enjoy the route step by step and be surprised by the extraordinary flora and fauna of the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà Natural Park.
