Valls has been a land of passage since prehistoric times. However, it is not until the twelfth century, once the Saracen defeat materialized, that the first written documents appear. During part of its history it became the second most important city in Tarragona. In its old town you can see vestiges of the Jewish quarter. On the other hand, there are buildings of great historical value such as the church of Sant Joan Baptista which dates from the 18th century or the Roser chapel.
The Valls Museum is a space where you can see collections that encompass different styles of contemporary Catalan art such as works by Tàpies, Brossa or Miró. In its facilities there is also a space dedicated to the castle world.
During the month of January , the Calçotada festival is celebrated in Valls. In this event it is traditional to eat calçots accompanied by a delicious sauce. In addition, competitions are organized to see who can eat the most calçots and also markets and traditional dances.
The castellar days are one of the main emblems of Catalan culture. Precisely the city of Valls is one of its origins and one of the most representative localities. Castle days are held throughout the year, however, the most popular are those of Sant Joan and Santa Úrsula.
